go to tools > plugins > enable "Pidgin Theme Editor".

go to tools > pidgin theme editor > edit buddy list theme > change font to either "Monospace" or "MingLiu".

go to tools > preferences > conversations > uncheck "use font from theme" > select font to either "Monospace" or "MingLiu".
